Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Passes Away at the Age of 99
On April 9th, 2021, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, passed away at 99. He is best known as the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, husband for 73 years. Prince Philip was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.
His death will be honored in many ways in the United Kingdom and across the world. Leaders poured in messages honoring the late Prince. Some people have considered that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made very basic remarks in honor of the life of Harry’s great-grandfather.
On their website, they simply stated, “In Loving Memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021… Thank you for your service…you will be greatly missed.” The website will soon be updated and was marked as “temporarily unavailable” for the time being.
In any case, the drama-riddled couple will honor Prince Philip’s life when they return to England for his funeral. This may cause controversy, as the couple recently has a public spat with the Royal Family.
Prince Philip will be remembered as a wartime hero. He finished top of his class in 1940.
His relationship with Queen Elizabeth began at the young age of 17 when he escorted her at a visit to one of the naval academies. The two fell in love, and in 1943, Elizabeth placed a picture of him on her nightstand.
After the war, Prince Philip asked the royal family to have Elizabeth’s hand for marriage. The royal family agreed, making the relationship between Prince Philip and Elizabeth one of the few that was not arranged. The two got married in November of 1947.
Prince Philip lived a truly fascinating life. He was a man who would speak his mind and a man with firm conviction. He will truly be missed.
Social media has mourned the loss, with all of the royal Instagram/Twitter pages changing their profile pictures in a symbolic move of honor. The profiles now display somber monograms, as opposed to their earlier, more lighthearted images. Various posts have been made on social media, with the hashtag #PrincePhilip now totaling over 120,000 Instagram posts.
