Social Media Apps TikTok & MX TakaTak Thrive In Q1
Despite various challenges, including several countries banning the platform entirely, App Annie’s new chart reveals that TikTok is still the most popular social media app in the world as of 2021’s first quarter. Today, TikTok has around seven hundred million users globally and is hoped to surpass one billion by the end of 2021.
TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms globally, which presents an alternative version of online sharing. It allows users to create short videos with music, filters, and other features. The app captures a variety of content from education, to sports, to entertainment.
Launched in September 2016, TikTok has exploded in popularity over the past couple of years. As reported by Sensor Tower, statistics show that the TikTok app has been downloaded over 2.6 billion times worldwide. That makes the app the seventh-largest platform in terms of users, ahead of older and established venues such as Snapchat and Twitter.
Other apps featured in App Annie’s chart include Youtube, which is at the top of the Consumer Spending column. YouTube has a wide variety of in-app purchases, including YouTube Premium, Channel Memberships, Super Chat, and Super Sticker.
Ecommerce and online shopping have spiked tremendously. The spending on apps has increased up to 40% in a year, and almost $32 billion has been spent on in-app purchases for iOS and Google Play in the first quarter alone of 2021. Slowly and steadily, the internet has become the face of shopping, even in underdeveloped countries.
App Annie shared new insights on this year’s breakout apps in addition to download and usage stats. Coming in at number one in quarter one is MX TakaTak, an alternative to TikTok in India. Because the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, the Indian short-form video app has filled the gap left by TikTok’s ban in the nation, seeing a significant amount of success.
“MX TakaTak offers you real and fun videos that you can watch and share on social media. Browse all types of videos ranging from Dialogue Dubbing, Comedy, Gaming, DIY, Food, Sports, Memes and many more,” says the app’s description on Google Play.
Since its launch in July of last year, MX TakaTak has witnessed tremendous growth, clocking in more than 100 million downloads on Play Store. Within a couple of months of its existence, the app began garnering over 10 million daily active users and a billion daily video views. It ranks number 7 in downloads of this quarter.
According to the report by Buzzoka, MX TakaTak is expected to be a top-three social media platform for Influencer Marketing in India during 2021-22.
With quarter one of 2021 already in the past, there have been many changes in the scene of social media. With three more quarters to face, we’ll see how these worldwide apps continue to evolve and flourish.
