The Continuous Innovation Into Virtual Reality Technology

There are times when life can be overwhelming, and sometimes the best solution is an excellent escape from reality. Previously, immersive outlets to heed this desire were unimaginable, but the 21st century has catapulted our ability to jump into a separate world.

Virtual Reality is defined as  “a computer-generated simulation in which a person can interact within an artificial three-dimensional environment using electronic devices, such as special goggles with a screen or gloves fitted with sensors.” Through virtual reality (coined V.R), users can engulf themselves in an online world’s pleasures. In the abstract, the concept is simply riveting. The idea of being able to implant yourself within a world that bends to your will is one that sparks interest among nearly everyone.

Although it was first conceptualized around 1968, Virtual Reality didn’t play a large part in entertainment until the Oculus Rift debuted in July of 2012. Since then, we’ve seen this concept (mostly spearheaded by Oculus) take over the market. Today, it’s not difficult to find a Virtual Reality system on typical selling platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and others. As Oculus continues to release its complete product line, competitors are scrambling to innovate further into the digital realm.

The games themselves present a unique value that other consoles simply cannot provide. When you’re in Virtual Reality, it’s a first-person experience that encapsulates a 3D world created around the google you put on. For example, a Minecraft V.R adventure will allow you to play Minecraft through Steve himself’s lens, making for an exciting experience.

In terms of sales, Virtual Reality headsets and equipment alike are doing quite well. By the end of 2020, an estimated 68 million units will have been sold, leaving a lark mark on the commercial entertainment industry.

Interestingly enough, Virtual Reality sets aren’t too pricey. With most Oculus systems priced within a three-digit range, they’re a relatively inexpensive tech option for the family to enjoy. Through Virtual Reality, a player can experience any topic of their choosing. From classic childhood games like Minecraft and Tetris to a 3D immersive experience of the Titanic wreckage, there’s a niche and an experience for all sorts of interests.

The idea behind Virtual Reality innovation plays to the concept of having full control of your surroundings, so I’m interested in seeing where this goes in the future!
