The Impact of “Back to the Future Part II” on Futuristic Perception
The Back To The Future series holds a serious amount of retro-futurist value. The retrofuturistic analysis comes from analyzing past perceptions of future advancement. Back To The Future Part II finds protagonist Marty McFly traveling to the future to stop an action from happening, namely a crime committed by his future son. McFly encounters a multitude of subtle, not so subtle, and downright cool instances of futuristic prediction throughout his journey.
Cars
Beginning with a more low-key (although noticeable) instance, the movie’s setting frequently features cars speeding through the backdrop. However, before taking a look at these, it’s essential to address the non-subtle car from the movie. The legendary Delorean doesn’t exactly blend in with the timeframe. Fitted with a customizable time machine and flying capabilities, this car served as a more optimistic (haha) prediction of the future.
Less noticeably, the cars featured in the movie sport’s general setting a variety of unique colorways and sleek bodies. McFly can be seen around a 1989 Ford Probe with an obviously altered colorway and frontal scheme in one scene. Although it’s a relatively simple change, the car looks remarkably different and fits perfectly with the setting.
Hoverboards
If you’ve watched the movie, you definitely remember the legendary hoverboard. Equipped with a scooter-esque steering wheel (later snapped off by McFly) and a hot pink design with the pattern of a 70s diner, the piece acts as an iconic item from the movie.
What gives the hoverboard so much value in today’s world is the presentation. The idea that something so futuristic would eventually become a general retail item was one that left moviegoers excited for what was to come in the later years. Interestingly enough, replicas of the board are sold as memorabilia online. Although they’re non-functional, bringing the board to life has a particular intrinsic value.
Nike Air Mags
The Nike Air Mags are likely the most memorable item from the movie. Why? Because they were later brought to full-functioning life.
Retailing for around $10,000, you can purchase a pair of self-lacing air mags. Complete with all the movie’s abilities, the Nike Mags act as the holy grail for its fandom.
While the Mags generally serve as a collectors piece for lovers of the series, they’ve somewhat made their way into high-end retailers, partially accomplishing the prediction.
Pepsi Perfect
Shortly before the infamous diner brawl scene, Pepsi Perfect makes an appearance. Sporting a smooth transparent/cylindrical design, the diner serves up a futuristic Pepsi. Like the Mags, you can purchase Pepsi Perfect online.
So, why do we enjoy Back To The Future Part II so much? The futuristic possibility lets the mind wander, essentially providing a framework for our later years. Interestingly enough, the items presented in the movie have found themselves in a position in everyday society, even if it’s just as memorabilia.
