The Process of Finding the Perfect Hogwarts House
First published in 1997, Harry Potter has become an instant classic for readers across the world. So, what makes the book (authored by J.K Rowling) so popular? With a mixture of fantasy, relatability to the main character, and a dream-like setting, the series provides a refreshing escape from reality.
Famously noted throughout the saga’s entirety, the four houses act as criteria for young witches and wizards’ futures. Readers have long anticipated their own “sorting” into a house of their preference, and we’re here to help you decide which clan best suits you. When brought together, the four houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin) can form a bond of unmatchable power.
Gryffindor
Occupied by the majority of the famous main characters, Gryffindor is the staple house of the books. With dashing courage, street-smart brains (and book smarts as well in the case of Hermoine), and everlasting yearning for adventure, Gryffindor may be the house for you. If you’re a Gryffindor, you exhibit:
- A need to help others
- The courage to take risks
- A vibrant spirit
- Confrontational social tendencies
- A tendency to make your own rules
- The love of attention/the spotlight
Ravenclaw
Occupied by Cho Chung and Cedric Diggory, Ravenclaw is the most rational house of them all. Making decisions based on logic and reasoning, Ravenclaws typically exhibit a mental CBA before making a choice. Known for their wisdom, cleverness, and creative wit, you’re likely a Ravenclaw if you:
- Analyze things on a deep level
- Make rationale-based decisions
- Are generally conservative with taking risks
- Believe that knowledge=power
- Have a curiosity for learning
- Value history
Hufflepuff
While they’re generally portrayed as the weakest house, Hufflepuff’s love conquers all other factors. Believing that everyone has a unique value, Hufflepuff prides itself on not discriminating between members. Hufflepuffs are loyal and view each other as family. Basing their values on the principle that every being deserves a chance, Hufflepuffs are emotionally steady. If you’re a Hufflepuff, common traits include:
- Kindness
- The belief that everyone has a unique talent
- Fairness
- Dedication
- Tolerance
- Moderation/Modesty
Slytherin
Seen as the “bad guy,” most readers tend to dislike the Slytherin house. Mainly fueled by the fact that all criminal wizards came from the house, most students tend to dislike the clan. However, Slytherin may not be as bad as the other houses make it seem. Slytherins value victory above anything, and will do anything to get the win. If you were to join Slytherin, you likely experience:
- A “tunnel vision” mentality
- Ruthless determination
- Ambition
- Creativity
- Cleverness
- Loyalty to your inner circle
Whichever house you choose to become part of in the Harry Potter world, your future will be bright! Each clan provides a unique experience, but no house is superior to the others. Next stop: Hogwarts.
