The average American spends over 4.5 hours staring at a screen. Between phones, computers, tablets, and other consoles, increasing screen times have been called into question by doctors and psychologists.

Social networking sites use influence and persuasion techniques to attract users, which leads to screens becoming a procrastination trap that capitalizes on subconscious dependencies.

One company is looking to construct a social experiment that analyzes the potential extent to which technological addiction exists. After a recent survey concluding that 3 of 4 Americans would consider themselves addicted to their phones, Reviews.org has created the Digital Detox challenge.

A product review blog based out of Salt Lake, Reviews.org, calls on consumers to try spending a 24-hour day without any technology. Phones, laptops, smartwatches, tablets, and a variety of others, are all included.

If the participant succeeds, they’ll receive a prize of $2,400. Only one applicant will be chosen to attempt the challenge, which the company says may not be as easy as you think.

The “Digital Detox Challenger,” as they’ve called the competitor, will be notified ahead of time about their acceptance into the program. Soon after, they’ll be provided with a few supplies, both to keep them entertained and regulated.

They’ll be sent a safe to store their phones in, which will keep them honest. However, to stay busy, they’ll be given a $200 Amazon gift card to build a techless survival kit, which will act as a care package to help them get through the day. Sounds like fun, right?

Some recommendations for the money’s allocation are provided, with board games, books, and paint supplies being among them.

The application process will close on March 26, 2021, at 5:00 pm MST, and the official participant selection will be announced on March 29. The official form can be found here.
